Indian shot putter Tejinder Pal Singh Toor from Punjab has clinched Gold in men’s Shot-Put event with a record-shattering throw at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games on August 25. He threw the iron ball to 20.75m to win the gold and set a national as well as Asian Games record. The previous mark of 20.57m was set by Sultan Abdulmajeed Al-Hebshi of Saudi Arabia at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in China. With this, Tajinder became the first Indian to win the men’s shot put gold at the Asian Games since Bahadur Singh Sagoo, who had thrown a best of 19.03m to win the gold in Busan in 2002. This is the 8th gold medal for India in men’s shot put in the history of the Asian Games.

Indian Tennis player, Ankita Raina has won a bronze after losing a hard-fought women’s singles semifinal 4-6, 6-7 in straight sets against Shuai Zhang of China at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games on August 23. With this, she became the 2nd Indian female tennis player after Sania Mirza to win a medal in singles’ competition at the Asian Games. For India, Mirza won silver in Doha in 2006 and a bronze in Guangzhou 2010. Ankita from Maharashtra is currently India’s number one women’s singles.

Odisha for the First time is Organizing the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup, which will be the 14th edition of the Hockey World Cup field hockey tournament. It is scheduled to be held from 28 November to 16 December 2018, at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India. 16 Teams are to be participating in the Tournament. The Hague in Netherland hosted the Previous tournament in the year 2014, in which Australia won the title which is their third title and the Netherland became the Runner-Up. Only 12 Teams Participated in this Tournament. Ahead of this tournament, Odisha government has decided to launch a build-up campaign in 17 cities from August 29. The campaign will be organized in Rourkela, Mumbai, New Delhi, Bhubaneswar and other important cities and hockey states.

Indian rowing team of Sawarn Singh, Dattu Bhoknal, Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh won the Gold in men’s Quadruple Sculls event after clocking 6:17.13. This was India’s 5th Gold medal at the ongoing 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Indian shooter Shardul Vihan (15) from Uttar Pradesh clinched silver in the men’s double trap shooting event at the Jakabaring shooting range in the 18th Asian Games 2018 on August 23. He shot 73 to claim the silver medal, while Korea’s Shin Hyunwoo clinched gold with a score of 74. Qatar’s Al Marri Hamad Ali bagged the bronze after shooting 53 at the Jakabaring shooting range. Vihan, who is coached by former Asian Championship double gold medallist Anwer Sultan, had grabbed four gold medals at Shotgun Nationals Championship in 2017.

Jhulan Nishit Goswami, the veteran Indian women’s team pacer, has announced her retirement from International T20 cricket. She represented India in 68 T20Is picking up 56 wickets which included a 5-wicket haul against Australia in 2012. Goswami will only play One Day International (ODIs) (as India don’t play Test cricket), in which format she is the world’s highest wicket-taker with 200 scalps from 169 games. She hails from a nondescript town of Chakdah in West Bengal’s Nadia district.

On August 21, Indian Wrestler Divya Kakran clinched bronze in the 68 Kg Freestyle wrestling event at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. In the final, Kakran defeated her Chinese Taipei opponent Chen Wenling by technical superiority with the final score line reading 10-0. Her medal is a testament to her relentless hard work & determination. This is India’s third medal in wrestling after Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat claimed gold in their respective categories.

On August 22, Indian shooter Rahi Sarnobat has become the first-ever Indian woman to win an individual shooting medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. She bagged gold in the 25m pistol final event at the Jakabaring Shooting Range in Palembang, after prevailing in a double shoot-off at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. Earlier, in shooting, Saurabh Chaudhary won gold in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event. In wrestling, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat clinched gold in Men’s freestyle 65 kg and Women’s freestyle 50 kg, respectively. India is currently placed 7th in the tally with 12 medals, comprising 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze.

Shooter Saurabh Chaudhary (16) has clinched gold in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games in Indonesia on August 21. It is India’s first shooting gold in the ongoing event. While another Indian shooter, Abhishek Verma won bronze in the same event. India have won five medals in shooting at the Games so far.

On August 19, Wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched India’s first gold medal in the 18th Asian Games after defeating Takatani Daichi of Japan in the men’s 65 kg freestyle title bout in Jakarta, Indonesia. Punia, who hails from Haryana, had won three consecutive gold medals — 2018 CWG (Gold Coast), Tbilisi Grand Prix (Georgia) and Yasar Dogu International (Istanbul) — ahead of the 2018 Asian Games. Earlier, Indian shooters Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar won the bronze medal in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event at the 2018 Asian Games. It was India’s first medal in the ongoing event.

On August 17, 2018, BCCI officially handed over its hosting rights to the Emirates Cricket Board for the upcoming Asia Cup 2018. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Emirates Cricket Board signed an agreement for this purpose. This tournament would be held from September 15 to 28 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Countries participating in the event are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They will be joined by a sixth team — the winner of the Asian Cricket Council qualifier event. The major attraction of this tournament is two assured Indo-Pakistan clashes.

On 12th August 2018, R Vaishali became India’s latest Woman Grandmaster (WGM). She is the elder sister of R. Praggnanandhaa, who became the second youngest Grand Master in the world in June 2018. She is 17 years old. She completed her third and final WGM norm in the Riga Technical University Open chess tournament in Riga, Latvia.

On 12th August 2018, English cricketer James Anderson became the first player to take 100 wickets at Lord’s. James Anderson achieved this feat during the fourth day of the second Test against India. He took the wicket of Murali Vijay in the second over of India’s second innings to achieve this feat. Also, this was his 550th Test wicket. Overall, James Anderson is the second bowler to take 100 wickets at a single venue after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who has taken more than 100 wickets at 3 separate venues in Test matches.

Former India Test captain Ajit Wadekar passed away at 77 on Aug 15 after a prolonged illness. Wadekar made his debut in 1966 against the West Indies and went on to represent India in 37 Tests and two one-day internationals.

Viraj Madappa (20) from Kolkata has become the youngest Indian golfer to claim the Asian Tour title after lifting the 2018 TAKE Solutions Masters trophy in Bengaluru on August 12. Beside this, Madappa has also become the first rookie and youngest player to win on Tour this season. He takes home a winner’s prize purse of US$63,000 and earned a one-year winner exemption on the region’s premier Tour. The earlier record was held by Gaganjeet Bhullar, who won the Indonesia Invitational, when he was 21 years and three months, while Shubhankar Sharma won Joburg Open when he was 21 years and five months old.

On 4th August 2018, Saudi Arabia’s Mosaad Aldossary won the FIFA eWorld Cup held at The O2 Arena in London, Britain. Mosaad Aldossary defeated Belgium’s Stefano Pinna 4-0 on aggregate in the two-legged FIFA eWorld Cup Grand Final. Mosaad Aldossary won a prize money of $250,000. He is 18 years old. He competes with the name ‘MSDossary’.
