As per a new study, Blue whales may swallow roughly 10 million microplastic pieces daily, or up to about 95 pounds (43.5 kg) of plastic. Krill-favoring humpbacks may ingest about 4 million microplastic pieces (up to 38 pounds of plastic) daily, while those favoring fish may take in roughly 200,000 pieces (up to a couple of pounds of plastic).

Uttar Pradesh government to host Khelo India National University Games in 2023-2024 in four cities. Khelo India National University Games will be conducted in four cities of Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, and Noida.  In the Khelo India National University Games, 4,500 athletes will participate representing 150 universities across the country. There will be 20 disciplines including basketball, judo, kabaddi, wrestling, swimming, boxing, rowing, etc. Uttar Pradesh has got the opportunity to host the National University Games for the first time after Odisha and Karnataka.

An American technology giant, Google has launched a platform that displays flood forecasts, namely ‘FloodHub’. This platform shows the area and time where floods could occur, to inform people about the natural calamity so authorities can assist them effectively. The technology giant has also expanded its AI flood forecasting services to 18 counties across Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. To recall, these flood forecasting services supported by AI were first introduced in India back in 2018.

The Indian Prime Minister launched the logo, theme and website for the Indian G-20 Presidency. The G20 Logo draws inspiration from the colours of India’s national flag. The Earth reflects India’s pro-planet approach to life and below the G20 logo is ‘Bharat’. The emblem has various components from an open competition held through the myGov portal. India’s G20 Presidency theme is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth One Family One Future”. It is drawn from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India has notified the National Bioenergy Programme. The Ministry has continued the National Bio-energy Programme for the period from FY 2021-22 to 2025-26. The Programme has been recommended for implementation in two phases and the Phase-I of the Programme has been approved with a budget outlay of Rs. 858 crores. It consists of three sub-schemes: Waste to Energy Programme, Biomass Programme and Biogas Programme.

The Rising Sun Water Fest-2022 was held in the state of Meghalaya at Umiam Lake. The three day water sports and cultural fair was a first of its kind in the North East. It is aimed at encouraging the youth of North East to take up water sports like Rowing and Sailing. It also aimed at promoting tourism in the North East. It was an initiative by the Indian Army’s Eastern Command with the governments of Assam and Meghalaya.

The Central Government introduced the provision for EWS reservation in admissions and public services, through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment Act 2019. The Supreme Court pronounced the judgement on a batch of pleas challenging the validity of the amendment. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit upheld the 10 per cent quota for EWS in a 3:2 split verdict. Though the Chief Justice had struck down the amendment, the majority bench upheld the act.
