25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed on November 25 every year. It is a day to pay tribute to the Mirabal sisters, the Dominican Republic activists who were murdered at the order of Rafael Trujillo in 1960. The United Nations aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence against women. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. Violence against women is defined as any act of gender-based violence that causes physical, sexual, or psychological harm to women. Theme 2022 – UNITE! IIT Delhi is in the top 50 of Times Higher Education Employability Rankings. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is the only Indian educational institution among the top 50 in the Global University Employability Rankings by Times Higher Education (THE). IIT Delhi has been placed at the 28th position in the Top 50 of Times Higher Education Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS) revealing the world’s top 250 universities for producing employable graduates according to recruiters. It is followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru at rank 58 and IIT Bombay at rank 72. A total of seven Indian universities have made it to the top 250. Three US institutes have taken the top 3 positions – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, and Harvard University, respectively. The University of Cambridge and Stanford University have retained their position of fourth and fifth, respectively. The University of Oxford has risen from eighth to sixth position this year while the University of Tokyo from Japan has slipped from sixth to seventh. Yale University which was ranked seventh last year has slipped to 10th position.

Egypt’s President was invited as chief guest for Republic Day 2023. The Indian government has invited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the chief guest for the Republic day parade 2023. He will be the first Egyptian leader to be hosted by India for the Republic Day celebrations. This year, both countries celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The country was also invited to the India-Africa Defence Dialogue and IOR Defence Ministers’ Conclave on the sidelines of the 12th DefExpo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in October. Tamil Nadu government declared Arittapatti village in Madurai as a biodiversity heritage site. Arittapatti village in Madurai district has been announced as the first Biodiversity Heritage Site in Tamil Nadu. Arittapatti village is known to have a rich biological and historical significance with around 250 bird species including 3 flagship Raptor species – Laggar Falcon, Shaheen Falcon, Bonelli’s Eagle, and wildlife like Pangolin, Python, and Slender Loris. The development will benefit the numerous plant and animal species that brace the State. The Site spreads over 193.215 hectares in Arittapatti and Meenakshipuram villages in the Madurai district. The notification comes under the Biological Diversity Act, of 2002, and will strengthen biodiversity conservation and protect from rapid loss of biodiversity. Arittapatti consists of a chain of seven barren granite hillocks. It supports 72 lakes, 200 natural spring pools, and 3 check dams.

The 19th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 19) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is being held in Panama City. CITES also lauded the result achieved by the country in operations initiated by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau namely Operation Turtshield, to eliminate poaching and illegal trade of freshwater turtles.

The European Parliament has designated Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. The three-day apex-level regional strategic dialogue of the Indian Navy, the fourth edition of “Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue 2022” (IPRD-2022) began in New Delhi. The theme of IPRD-2022 is “Operationalising the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI)”, which was articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 14th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Bangkok on November 4, 2019, the defence ministry said. In the Inaugural Address that followed, Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, outlined the Indian Navy’s outreach in terms of fostering maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Kumar brought out numerous challenges that are not unique to India, but also relevant to other nations in the Indo-Pacific region which broadly included – Imperatives at Home, Influences from Outside and some Intrusive Paradigms, and these challenges would need a collective approach by all stakeholders in the region to ensure safe, secure and stable Indo-Pacific.

The panel of state finance ministers is likely to recommend a uniform GST levy of 28 per cent on online gaming irrespective of whether it is a game of skill or a game of chance. Currently, online gaming attracts 18 per cent GST. The tax is levied on gross gaming revenue, which is the fees charged by online gaming portals. The Group of Minister’s report is almost final and would be submitted to the GST Council soon for consideration. However, it is likely to suggest a revised formula for calculating the amount on which the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be levied.
