The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on 25th June 2020, formed a high-level committee headed by Justice BP Katakey, the former High Court judge of Gauhati, to investigate the blowout at Assam’s Baghjan oil well of Oil India Limited (OIL). A fine of Rs.25 crore has been imposed by NGT on OIL for the damages caused as a result of the fire. A closure notice was also served to OIL by the Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA) to stop the production and drilling in the Baghjan oilfield.
